This was our first attempt at a summit climb on Tongariro, Located in the center of New Zealand's North Island.
After Last years Adventure on the Alpine Crossing, We decided to give a summit climb a go.
We were hampered by gale force winds last year and blizzard like conditions. But this year as we got out the cars in the car park it was a bit concerning that we couldn't stand as we walked. 100 km/h winds but a beautiful sunny day.
We decided to have a crack and soldiered on. No snow was seen at the lower levels of the walk which was also a promising site.
The climb at times is a bit daunting, but step by step we got more and more excited as the day started to turn out as being a scorcher, but clear and no matter where we looked everything was a sign to behold.
I really felt like we were stepping out of a Lord of the Rings move set as the views were stunning.
Getting to Red crater after the Devils Staircase was a mission but a relief and a comfort as we could now see pour destination.
About 30 mins later we were able to summit and took some amazing photos and relaxed and had lunch at this beautiful spot in the sun.
Couldn't believe our luck with this weather and we were all fully taking it in.
We descended soon after safely and headed back to the Bach where a few beers were had while we had a spa to relax the muscles.
We are all looking forward now to next years Mt Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom from the Lord of the Rings Movies) Summit climb!
